Don't know Scott Mountain is a 1-point summit in the Oregon Central Coast (CC) region with a straightforward, easy grade hike of 2.2 miles each direction. The AZ contains ample space to set up on a dis-used roadbed with decent cell coverage for spotting.
From Oregon Hwy. 34, proceed west of Alsea. You will enter the Siuslaw National Forest. Driving directions are as follows:
- From Alsea, continue 14.9 miles west on Hwy. 34 to the start of FR 3420 at (44.37825, -123.76775).
- Proceed 1.5 miles up FR 3420 to the intersection with FR 3420-111 at (44.38481, -123.75795).
- Take the left, continuing on FR 3420, for 0.6 miles to a landslide at (44.38974, -123.76608). There is ample parking here for a few vehicles. NOTE: There is one small section with a deep rut on the right requiring moderate clearance to proceed. I had no trouble in a Subaru Forester but your Prius probably won't do well here.
- Hike across the slide, picking up this gentle roadbed again for 1.7 miles to the intersection with FR 3421 at (44.39840, -123.77878).
- Take the left onto FR 3421 and go 0.15 miles, then left onto FR 3421-113 at (44.39771, -123.78169).
- Proceed 0.4 miles to the AZ.
It may be possible to access the latter part of this hike via Weyerhauser land with the proper permits, via East Fall Creek Road. This option was NOT explored.
